Lake Havasu City location earns four Best of Havasu honors — providing another proof point for Burrito Shak’s expansion beyond its North Carolina roots.

When Burrito Shak expanded from coastal North Carolina to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, the move represented much more than another restaurant opening.

It was a test of whether a brand developed on the Carolina coast — built around fresh, chef-inspired Mexican food and a decidedly laid-back personality — could establish itself in a market more than 2,000 miles away.

Four years later, Lake Havasu has supplied a pretty compelling answer.

In the 2026 Best of Havasu Reader’s Poll conducted by Today’s News-Herald, Burrito Shak Lake Havasu received four Dining & Entertainment honors:

Because the awards are determined by local readers, the results provide something especially valuable for a growing restaurant franchise: third-party validation from the market itself.

More Than an Arizona Outpost

The Burrito Shak Lake Havasu City restaurant operates at 34 N. Lake Havasu Avenue and today is firmly embedded in the local business community.

The Lake Havasu Area Chamber of Commerce lists Burrito Shak among its member restaurants and describes the concept around its “Quick. Crafted. Coastal.” positioning, made-from-scratch burritos, tacos, quesadillas and other menu items.

The community’s official tourism organization, Go Lake Havasu, also includes Burrito Shak in its restaurant directory, highlighting its fresh ingredients, casual beach-inspired atmosphere and made-from-scratch Mexican cuisine.

Those may sound like small signals individually. Collectively, they matter.

For an emerging franchise brand, success in a distant market isn’t simply measured by whether a restaurant manages to stay open. The more meaningful question is whether that location becomes part of its community.

The 2026 Best of Havasu results suggest Lake Havasu has done exactly that.

A 2,300-Mile Franchise Test

Burrito Shak first documented the significance of its Arizona expansion when the restaurant celebrated its first anniversary in Lake Havasu City.

The move took the North Carolina-based concept approximately 2,300 miles west, introducing Burrito Shak to a market where customers had little or no previous familiarity with the brand. Franchise partner Melissa Zettel said at the time that the restaurant had been busier than expected and that the Lake Havasu community had embraced the concept.

That history gives the 2026 awards additional significance.

Lake Havasu wasn’t benefiting from years of Burrito Shak brand recognition. It had to build that recognition locally.

Customers had to discover the restaurant, try the food, return, recommend it and ultimately decide that Burrito Shak deserved their vote alongside other Mexican restaurants, taco shops and burrito concepts in the community.

That is exactly the kind of organic market validation that matters when evaluating whether an emerging restaurant franchise can travel.

Building a Local Restaurant, Not Simply Opening a Franchise

Successful franchising isn’t about placing identical restaurants into different ZIP codes and expecting the brand name alone to do the work.

The strongest franchise locations establish their own local relationships.

That has been a significant part of the Lake Havasu story.

Burrito Shak founder David Longo and Vice President of Development Chase Riker have remained directly involved with the Arizona team as the restaurant has grown. Visits to Lake Havasu and ongoing support from the franchisor put real people behind something prospective franchisees frequently hear promised during their research: ongoing franchisor support after opening day.

The Burrito Shak franchise opportunity is structured around support that begins well before a restaurant opens and continues through the development and operating process. The company’s franchise support information outlines assistance that includes site selection, lease negotiations, training, marketing and ongoing operational support.

Lake Havasu provides a real-world example of that relationship in action.

Why Lake Havasu Matters to South Carolina and Georgia

The Arizona track record becomes especially relevant as Burrito Shak moves into its next phase of franchise development.

The brand is currently focused on expanding its footprint throughout the Southeast, with South Carolina and Georgia representing particularly important development markets for 2026 and 2027.

For a prospective franchisee considering becoming one of the first Burrito Shak operators in a new South Carolina or Georgia market, Lake Havasu answers an important question:

Does Burrito Shak require existing local brand recognition in order to gain traction?

Arizona suggests it does not.

The Lake Havasu restaurant entered a market thousands of miles from the company’s home base and gradually developed its own customer following. The 2026 awards now provide an independent community benchmark of how far that relationship has progressed.

That’s more meaningful than simply adding another dot to a franchise development map.

It demonstrates what might be called market portability — the ability to take the underlying Burrito Shak food, operating system and brand identity into a new community and earn relevance there.

That distinction is particularly important for prospective franchisees considering opportunities in markets where Burrito Shak is still building its franchise footprint.

Being first in a market carries a different set of considerations than purchasing a franchise surrounded by dozens of existing locations. Lake Havasu provides evidence that a Burrito Shak franchisee does not necessarily need another Shak around the corner to establish the brand locally.

The restaurant has already done it more than 2,000 miles away.

Independent Recognition Carries More Weight

Prospective franchisees understandably hear a lot of claims during the research process.

Nearly every franchisor talks about quality. Every franchisor talks about culture. Most describe comprehensive training and strong support.

Independent evidence helps separate marketing language from actual market acceptance.

In Lake Havasu, there are now several external signals.

Burrito Shak is recognized within the Lake Havasu business community, promoted as a dining option by the city’s official tourism organization and, most significantly, has now received reader-voted first-place honors for Best Mexican Restaurant, Best Burrito and Best Tacos.

That does not mean every future Burrito Shak restaurant will duplicate Lake Havasu’s results.

It does demonstrate that the concept has already traveled far beyond its original geography and earned meaningful local acceptance once it got there.

For an emerging restaurant franchise preparing to enter additional markets in South Carolina, Georgia and elsewhere throughout the Southeast, that may be one of the most significant accomplishments of all.

Burrito Shak didn’t arrive in Lake Havasu as an established Arizona brand.

It became one.

And that is exactly the kind of real-world evidence prospective franchise partners should be examining as they decide which emerging restaurant franchises are seriously worth considering.
